Another Kayak Leader training course for teachers and outdoor leaders. It was very satisfying to work with 7 motivated adults mainly from secondary schools in Southland and Otago.

IMG_4016We spent time in the Blackmount School pool looking at teaching progressions and and trying a range of rescue methods.

The afternoon session on the Monowai pond  was spent improving paddling technique and learning new games. Those who had been on the earlier basic Kayak Skills course had an opportunity to teach segments, then get feedback on their style and sequencing. We finished off with rescue practice.

While most of us stayed overnight at Borland Lodge, the Tuatapere lads stayed on a local farm. They headed out hunting for 4 hours at night, then went back in the morning to carry out the 2 deer carcases. And they were still at the course on time in the morning!

Second day saw us split the group, with Blake Hanna of Southern Outdoor Instruction coaching 3 people on leading river trips, while the rest of us updated on some new paddle strokes. Then in the afternoon we all paddled down the Grade 2 rapids on the Waiau River as far as the Swingbridge.
